A beautiful mosaic tile (kashi mo’araq) inscription at the Ulugh Beg Madrassa in Samarqand, built in the early 15th century. The inscription states the Prophetic hadith:

“قال النبی صلی الله علیه و اله طلب علم افضل الا عمال صدق النبی”

“The Prophet peace be upon him said: searching for knowledge is the greatest of actions, the Prophet said truthfully”.

While the mosaic inscription looks to be original from the 15th century, the outer border is clearly from a later period considering its color palette and use of haft-rang (7-color) tiles instead of mosaic tiles. The inscription can be found above one of the doors to the student chambers around the courtyard of the said madrassa.
