The Abd Minaret, also known as the “the third minaret” was the oldest and original minaret of Imam Hussain’s Shrine in Karbala dating from the 13th century AD. This extremely rare and highly detailed photograph has just recently been leaked from the Qajar archives for the first time, and is perhaps the oldest known photograph of the minaret. The photograph shows fine details of the minaret and adjacent shrine previously unknown to be photographed. These details include the octagonal base of the minaret, the text of the minarets spiraling epigraphs, and the tiles which make up the thulth inscription band under the muezzins deck. The photograph also for the first time clearly shows the patterns of the Shrines surviving two minarets, which as the time were made of tile and curiously has inscription bands written in the Persian font Nastaliq. Many other observations can be made about the architectural and ornamental condition of the shrine at the time, the careful observer is welcome to share their observations.
