Death in Exile – Emir of Bukhara

Translation by Ali-Reza Goudarzi

Amir Alim Khan was the last ruler of the former Emirate of Bukhara (reign. 1911 – 1920). In the final days of the Emirate, while the Soviet Red Army captured the city he fled westwards, initially to Dushanbe, then finally to Afghanistan, where he lived the rest of his life in exile. It’s said he wrote the following short poem in the last days of his life and willed for it to be written on his grave.
