IMAM BUKHARI’S TOMB IN SAMARQAND WAS DEMOLISHED
The beautiful tomb of the famous 9th century scholar of Sunni Hadith, Muhammad ibn Ismail al Bukhari, located in the village of Khartang (on the outskirts of Samarqand) has been destroyed. The tomb complex was a magnificent edifice built in the Timurid revivalist style and was built between the years of 1997 to 1998, following Uzbekistan’s independence for the celebration of the 1225th birth anniversary of Imam Bukhari. The previous historic structures of Imam Bukhari’s tomb had fallen into disrepair after being forcefully abandoned during the years of communist rule over Uzbekistan. Although the tomb was not ancient it is still a shame to see its destruction. It was a very unique and special building, truly an heir to the ancient traditions of Persian architecture. Every single element of the tomb had been hand made by the best craftsmen from across Uzbekistan, from the magnificent mosaic calligraphic inscriptions, to the tall hand carved and highly ornate wooden columns, and the delicately painted ceiling of the columned arcades around the mausoleum structure.
It is said the tomb was destroyed, just 22 years after its original construction, in order to build an even bigger tomb complex to accommodate increased religious tourism- the same justification for destruction of architectural heritage that is used in other Islamic countries such as Iran, Iraq, India, and Saudi Arabia. Unfortunately though, as in all those other places, the real reason for this destruction is giving unqualified individuals and organizations the authority to make decisions towards the future of such important places, while neglecting the voices of those who are experts.

Боргоҳи Имом Бухорӣ дар Самарқанд тахриб шуд
Боргоҳи зебо аз донишманди маъруфи ҳадис аз асри 9 ҳум, Муҳаммад ибни Исмоили Бухорӣ, дар кишлоқи Хартанг (дар хориҷи шаҳри Самарқанд) тахриб шуд. Ин боргоҳи бошукуҳ иморатӣ дар сабки меъмории Темуриён буд ки дар соли 1997 то 1998 бино шуда буд. Ин бино ба муносибати 1225 солгарди тавалуди Имом Бухорӣ баъд аз истиқлоли Узбекистон бино шуд. Иморати пешинаи боргоҳи Имом Бухорӣ ба сабаби бетавваҷуҳии ҳукумати коммунистӣ ба шакли хароби дар омада буд. Гарчи ин бино бинои таърихи набуд, лекин тахриби он кори нодуруст буд. Ин мақбара бинои вижа ва нотакрор буд, ва дар ҳақиқат меросхӯри суннатҳои қадими меъмори ва ҳунари Эронтабор буд. Ҳар як аз қисматҳои боргоҳ аз катибаҳои кошӣ кори муаъррақ, кандакорӣ сутунҳои баланд, ва нақшунигори сақфҳои мазор, тавассути беҳтарин ҳунармандони Ӯзбекистон сохта шуда буд.
Ин бино танҳо 22 сол баъд аз сохт тахриб шуд то маҷмӯаи бузургтаре барои пазириши зиёраткунандагони бештар сохта шавад. Ҳамин баҳона барои тахриби бисёрии аз биноҳои таърихи дар дигар кишварҳои исломи ҳамчун Эрон, Ироқ, Покистон, Арабистон ва бисёр кишварҳои дигар истифода мешавад. Далели аслии ин тахрибҳо мутаасифона мудирияти ин биноҳо тавассути афроди ғаири мутахассис ва камсавод дар риштаи меъмори аст.
