A nobleman from the later years of the Emirate of Bukhara, 19th century. While the Emirate of Bukhara struggled to survive as an independent state in a Russian controlled Central Asia, the sophistication of its court culture and arts thrived. The delicate clothing of noblemen serves as testament of a different time when men wore lavishly ornate clothes rich with floral patterns and made of the finest materials. The rich traditions of ornamental clothing for men were largely forgotten after the imposition of Euro culture that came with Russian colonization, however on special occasions men in Central Asia still often don colorful and pattern rich robes, such as the Chapan or Joma as is locally called.
